If you haven't ridden Ortega Highway yet, or not in a long time, this is your last chance to enjoy it.
Starting this Tuesday, CalTrans will be doing construction on a 3.3 mile stretch running from the San Juan Creek Bridge to the Orange County & Riverside County line. The construction will continue until 2010.
Traffic will be closed from 8:30pm to 4:30am.
Outside of those times, traffic will move in only one direction, depending on the time of day.
Here's a link to an article about this in the OC Register...

I heard that they were only adding 4", that's right, inches to the roadway so that it qualifies for federal funding. And I guess they are adding a few barriers, signs and cleaning up brush. We'll see what it looks like in a couple years cause i'm staying off it till then. JR

Don't stay off of it completely. Hells Kitchen could be really hurt by this. I know the guy who runs it, and am trying help him out by spreading the word.

I took my "cage" thru Ortega Hwy. today (Thur). It was approx. 11 a.m. I sailed past Hell's Kitchen, with no delays. After entering O.C. there was a one min. delay while a Cal Tran's car lead traffic going towards Lake Elsinore, and we waited our turn. On the way home from O.C., I decided to take Ortega Hwy, again. It was now 6:30 p.m. and raining. Still, the delay was only 2 min. before traffic was allowed to pass. Traffic typically goes between 40 - 50 m.p.h. on Ortega Hwy. Today, it went from 25-30 m.p.h. so it was a bit slower, but not that much. And yes, there were lots of cars but no true delays. Personally, I think all the controversy is a NON ISSUE.
